Bob Herbert-A New Civil Rights Movement

The article by Bob Herbert was interesting and true in many ways, there isn't accessible avenues to the communities with a large drop out rate. Until services provided in the wealthy districts are available to all districts this increased drop out rates among young African American youths will continue to increase. There is a need for more positive role models to step up to help out the youth and maybe a boost of encouragement about setting goals for their future.
The Newt-Ginrich video was not surprising to me, most conservative politicians do not know what goes on in disadvantaged communities and are ignorant to what needs to be done to increase positivity in those communities and for this politician to include all African Americans in one group shows the ignorance of many whom think the same as he does.

  1. Good post. I definitely agree with you that most conservative politicians have trouble understanding disadvantaged communities. The video we watched reflected his ignorance, because he assumed that only the Black community uses food stamps. Poverty is a huge issue around the entire country, because there is a lack of jobs. He overlooks the huge issue of poverty in the United States and simply makes a stereotype against the Black community.

  2. I also agree that most conservative politicians have trouble understanding what really happens in an underprivileged community, since most have never had to grow up in one. I also agree that there are need for more positive roles in African American's lives but especially the youth since they are our future. All it takes to change one person for the better is another person being helpful and positive to that person. By making the statement that Newt Gingrich made he is basically stating most of the Black community is in poverty when that is not true at all. He does not even mention any other race.

  3. Cynthia, I like the fact that you proposed more possible avenues for helping out those in the Black community that face the many issues pointed out by Herbert. Positive role-models, availability and equal access to services, as well as many other changes need to be made in order for these issues to begin to decrease. As for Gingrich, this video does show ignorance. His one-step and simple statement to "demand paychecks" encompasses a lack of research for why Blacks, as well as all races on food stamps, are not receiving these paychecks he speaks of.
